A major clean up is underway following destructive storms at Carinda.

The small town in Walgett Shire has sustained significant damage to commercial businesses and homes.

Impact assessments are underway. Preliminary assessments indicate at least 12 properties are severely damaged and uninhabitable. Multiple commercial buildings including the pub, pizza shop and general store have been reported as damaged.

Power and telecommunication services are currently disrupted and are being supported by several generators.

NSW State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers have deployed from Tamworth and Dubbo, to join local units from Nyngan, Walgett and Warren in the clean up efforts.

NSW SES incident controller, Chief Superintendent Brigid Rice, said the priority for crews on the ground was rendering properties safe, undertaking impact assessments and supporting displaced residents.

“These homes are likely to be without power until at least tomorrow afternoon. Mobile communications are also intermittent due to the damage in the area,” she said.

Chief Superintendent Rice said the NSW SES was also undertaking preparations to resupply the community with potable water.

The NSW SES is working with the NSW Telco Authority and electricity providers to ensure services are restored as quickly as possible.

Welfare services have been established and are available for impacted residents.
