Singleton Unit
'One day I could be using a chainsaw, the next I'm helping organise a press conference. There really is a role for everyone!'
I'm 21 years old and I own a Dance School in Singleton. I joined the NSW SES in 2015 and haven't looked back. I am the Community Engagement and Media Officer for the Singleton Unit and I help out at other locations frequently in the community engagement space. I love my role within the NSW SES, so much so I decided to study a bachelor of communications to learn even more about the area I volunteer in, and one day even make it my career.
I get to spend so much time with the community teaching them about the NSW SES and the importance of being prepared. I get to plan events, meet new people and make a difference in our community.
I love helping others so I joined the NSW SES. The reason I have stayed with the SES and plan to stay is because of the amazing opportunities and range of different things I get to do within the service.
One day I could be using a chainsaw, the next I'm helping organise a press conference. There really is a role for everyone!
I love the relationships I get to build with people all over NSW, and even Australia. I am continuously given so many opportunities to learn new skills and meet new people while doing so. Their are so many like minded people within the organisation, its hard not to make friends!
As well as media training I have learnt how to set up a roof kit, repair a broken window, drive a boat and even use a chainsaw.
If you are willing to put in the time, the NSW SES can teach you so many skills and give you so many opportunities.
I couldn't encourage anyone enough to head down to their local SES unit and see what it's all about.
The NSW SES is like one big extended family that teaches you a range of practical, life long skills. The best bit is, you get to help your community while building relationships and learning new skills.
