Parramatta Unit

"I’m currently a student at the Kings school. I really came to love the NSW SES through the school cadet program, so I continued being a volunteer after the course finished."

Tell us a bit about yourself and your role within NSW SES?

I’m currently a student at the Kings school. I originally joined the NSW SES to help people, but luckily my school decided to run a cadet program with the help of the Parramatta unit. It was through that course that I really came to love the NSW SES, so I continued being a volunteer after the school course finished.

Why did you join NSW SES? Anything that was deciding factor for you?

I joined the NSW SES so I could learn how to help people. I remember seeing trees that had come down on a road during a storm and I used to think how great it would be if I could jump out and remove them, but I didn’t know how.

What is your favourite part about being a member of the NSW State Emergency Service?

Definitely the people, but also the experiences that you get going on jobs.

What skills have you learnt along the way?

I’m chainsaw qualified, I’ve learnt how to respond to job about storm damage, ground and heights, radio communications, just basic on the job skills that you learn. Basic common sense.

What advice would you give to others that are thinking to join?

Give it a go. You might think it’s something that you won’t enjoy but you never know until you’re here and you’re with other NSW SES volunteers. You might find that you make some new friends and learn some cool skills. Even when you’re sitting in an Operations Office you know that you’re helping and people are really grateful for that.
