The Hills Unit
I joined because I have interests in disaster management and wanted to develop in this area.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your role within NSW SES?
I have been a member of NSW SES for the last two-and-half years and joined because I have interests in disaster management and wanted to develop in this area. Very early on I attended the Media Liaison Training and loved it. I really felt at home with the team, training and what I could do in this role.
Why did you join NSW SES?
I am experienced in Trauma and Disaster Management in my professional role and wanted to gain further experience in a safe space and have the opportunity to learn skills I never thought I would want to do.
What is your favourite part about being a member of NSW State Emergency Service?
My favourite part of volunteering with NSW SES is being able to work in a multidisciplinary team with people of all different experiences and backgrounds. I love the experience I have gained through the most recent bushfires and February storms, and seeing how teams work so well together.
What are the various skills you have learnt along the way?
I have learned several skills since volunteering for NSW SES, such as speaking on the radio, which I now practice with my children on walkie talkies when on holidays. But my favourite skill is working with the media. It's a unique skill, which can be transferable to many areas, having said that it has brought me self-confidence and I have learned that the greater the planning and preparation the better the result.
What advice would you give to others that are thinking to join?
My advice to those who are thinking of joining is that NSW SES is not what you think. There are so many amazing opportunities, skills and roles you can learn and be part of that you just need to give it a go! You never know where your interests may take you.
