Campbelltown Unit
"I have been a member for almost 9 years and feel at home."
I love helping the newer members trying to find their way and get an understanding of our training processes, it is very rewarding when you see the pride in their face after they have completed something they previously had no skills in at all.
I joined NSW SES along with my husband after he saw an add in the local paper. Truthfully I was not as enthused as he was at first but on the information night at the unit they explained all the different tasks and aspects. That was it, I was hooked for life! As a senior female, I liked the idea of being self sufficient and able to help others in time of crisis. It is very empowering.
There are many aspects of being a member, I wholeheartedly embrace looking out for the welfare of others. Out of Area (OOA) deployments and the friendships that are formed, my newfound problem solving skills and being a small part of a huge group of people who are like minded.
Skills I have learnt are too many to list but some of my favourites include Land search and Urban Search And Rescue (USAR). First Aid is a personal passion and my aim is to soon become a trainer and assessor. I have also learnt to be a mediator, a big sister, how to safely and efficiently perform each varied task that is put in front of me.
Another skill I enjoy is talking to the public at local community events and telling them about all the amazing things that NSW SES does on a personal level.
DO IT !!!! DO IT !!!! DO IT !!!! I may be a little biased but it was an absolute lifechanging decision for me and one I wish I had made decades ago. I feel accomplished, useful and part of a wonderful orange family of people of all different skill levels, religions, races, genders and ages all aiming for the same outcome.
