The Hills Unit
“There were houses with more than 300 holes from the hail. The community was devastated.”
The Hills Unit Commander Evelyn Lester recalls the damage from a hailstorm which swept across the Hills Shire, Sydney in 2017.
“There were houses with more than 300 holes from the hail. The community was devastated. We saw first-hand the hardship of families trying to get back to normal after their homes were damaged.”
Evelyn also was one of many NSW State Emergency Service volunteers who went to North Queensland to help after Tropical Cyclone Yasi in 2011.
“There were two storey houses with the top story blown off. I remember looking at the furniture in those homes and thinking the family would have been sitting there watching tv just the day before.”
