I bleed Orange! The journey I’ve had in the NSW SES has been challenging and amazing
Who are you and what is your role with the NSW SES?
I’m the Acting Deputy Unit Commander for Community Capabilities, Campbelltown Unit. I am a proud Wiradjuri woman from Trangie/Dubbo way and in the last seven years I have accumulated 5 grandkids! I’ve been a NSW SES member for 28 years.
Why did you join the NSW SES?
When I was a full-time Mum, I lived in a very multicultural community. All my neighbours used to ask for my help to fix things. We often had community events and festivals along the main road. At one of these events there was an NSW SES stall - I put my name down and have been with the agency ever since.
What is your favourite part about the NSW SES?
I just love it – it’s like an extra family. I bleed Orange! The journey I’ve had in the NSW SES has been challenging and amazing. It’s been a real experience.
I love doing out-of-area jobs, it’s like a big reunion for me because I know so many other volunteers out in the field.
What skills have you learned along the way?
I was the first female in my Unit to do the Chainsaw course and become a Team Leader shortly after I joined. I train new members and get them out in the field. I love doing things to help the community. My experiences in the NSW SES have made me more of a determined person. I’m very focused and I give 110% to any job that I’m doing.
What are some of your most memorable experiences with the NSW SES?
I remember the first time I was able to drive a NSW SES truck, and the first chainsaw job that I did. It gave me confidence.
I remember the Thredbo landslides. My birthday is on 1st August and the landslide happened on 30th July. There were 18 NSW SES members who went back the following year for the anniversary. We got an orange wreath made up and we were able to place it on the memorial site.
I received a commendation in 2006. When I was getting my commendation, I remember the then Director-General saying “I’m better off telling you what Debbie hasn’t done, because telling you what she has done would take too long.”
