Albury Unit
"I joined the NSW SES to help people in my community and to learn new lifesaving skills."
Tell us a bit about yourself and your role within NSW SES?
I started volunteering with the NSW SES two years ago and in in that time I have become the NSW SES Albury Unit’s Duty Officer and a qualified Heights Operator in Storm and Water Damage Operations. I’m also currently training to be a Chainsaw Operator and learning the ropes (pardon the pun) of becoming a Team Leader.
What is your favourite part about being a member of the NSW State Emergency Service?
I love engaging with the community and promoting NSW SES safety messages to the public to help them prepare for flood and storms. I also like demonstrating our equipment such as the NSW SES emergency response vehicles and boats.
What are the various skills you have learnt along the way?
I have learnt how to interact with others, use a chainsaw and tying new rope knots which I never knew existed.
What advice would you give to others that are thinking to join?
Get involved with the NSW SES to help the community, meet new people and broaden your area of knowledge. It will also give you life skills to use even when you are not doing a NSW SES job.
Thinking about becoming a volunteer like Curtis but not sure what you'd like to do?
