Wagga Wagga Unit
I have learnt how to use a chainsaw to cut trees, and how to fell trees that are a danger of falling.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your role within NSW SES?
I have been with NSW SES since 2011. During my time with the Service, I have been a Training Officer, Team Leader and Deputy Unit Controller in various units. I have enjoyed being in positions of responsibility, but I have most enjoyed the ability to just get out there and help people.
Why did you join NSW SES?
I wanted to learn new skills like how to use a chainsaw and to also help my community during tough times.
What is your favourite part about being a member of the NSW State Emergency Service?
I love the friends I have made, but mostly I really like the ability to do things that are considered out of the ordinary, like jumping up on a roof and putting up a tarp, or saving someone (and their dog) trapped in floodwater.
What are the various skills you have learnt along the way?
I have learnt how to use a chainsaw to cut trees, and how to fell trees that are a danger of falling. This was something I didn’t think I would do when I first joined NSW SES. I’ve also learnt how to rescue people using vertical, swift water, and road crash rescue techniques, something I have had to use on many occasions to save people.
What advice would you give to others that are thinking to join?
It is a good way to meet different people from different walks of life, as well as helping the community. All I can say is if you’ve been thinking about joining NSW SES give it a go – I did and it was the best decision I made.
